INSTITUTUM
CANARIUM
THE SOCIETY
The Institutum
Canarium - founded in 1969 - is an international and interdisciplinary research
association which is concerned with the history of the civilization (cultural
history) of the Canaries. Rock art and related questions about the history
of colonization, language and religion are some of the main fields of research.
In addition, archaeology, anthropology and ethnology are in the centre of
scientific interest. Beyond the Canary Islands, the IC is also concerned
with the cultures of the Mediterranean region. Furthermore, its interdisciplinary
orientation allows the IC to cooperate with specialists of various other
scientific fields like the natural sciences, sociology and architecture.
In some cases the period studied may extend to the present. Members have
the opportunity to participate in specialty groups within the different
areas of research interest, in order to facilitate an intensive scientific
dialogue.
IC members are mainly comprised of specialists, institutes and interested
persons. The institute is engaged in a worldwide exchange of publications
with numerous universities, academies and research institutes in 21 countries.
