LBI-PROJECT
GUEST COMMENTS
LBI

It looks great and very comprehensive to me, but I do lack the expertise
in W-Saharan studies to comment knowledgeably.
Your site is really very well organized and easily accessible. Of course
it is now limited to Canaries Islands and a few sites in Morocco, but
when extended to cover also Algeria, Tunisia and Libya it would become
a very important scientific tool. Congratulations.
I am flattered that you have sought my views and comments on rock art
recording and data storage. The critical issues are site and data protection.
Will your program limit access to authorized investigators? You are
to be commended for your effort. A worldwide rock art data base is to
be encouraged.

The method of cataloguing the libyco-berber inscriptions on the Canary
Islands as developed by Professor Pichler's team should be more widely
used, in North Africa and in the Sahara ; both for inscriptions and
for rock engravings. The cataloguing work carried out is exemplary in
every way: both in the precise situation of the sites through use of
satellite coverage, in the quality of the photographs shown, and also
in the accompanying ink tracings and the corresponding bibliography.
The LBI website is a wonderful research tool and teaching instrument.
It has already become part of the resources used in my course, Rock
Art - A Mediterranean Prehistory, at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Indeed, LBI is now one of links of this course blackboard and electronic
reservations which student will tap into for their understanding of
Mediterranean rock art.
The study of ancient inscription is crucial to our understanding of
human cultures. We are fortunate to have Werner Pichler and his team
from the Institutum Canarium focus attention on the ancient Libyco-Berber,
especially in the Canary Islands, which, in some sense, is the "Galapagos"
of the evolution of writing.
